Sometimes you meet people and their spirits are so infectious you can’t help but feel happier when you’re around them. Kylee and Drew are those kind of people. Kylee is like summer sunshine personified; warm and welcoming with a smile that lights up a room and a laugh that comes easily, and often. Drew has a big heart and kind eyes that shine a little brighter whenever he looks Kylee’s way. Together they are generous and genuine, and such a joy to be around.
It is difficult to say what my favorite part of their day was, because everything was so wonderful, but if I had to choose one thing it would be the story of the pocket watch. Shortly before the ceremony, Drew asked if I would take a photo of him holding a pocket watch that his grandfather had given to him before he passed away. The answer of course was an immediate yes. I clicked a few frames and moved on, not thinking too much about it until the ceremony was over.
Post-ceremony time as a wedding photographer can be a bit hectic with excited newlyweds surrounded by equally excited friends and family, and typically a limited amount of time to get everyone in order for group portraits. As I was working on ushering our group nearer the water for family pictures I noticed Drew hanging back, appearing more emotional than I usually see during such a happy time. I walked back to him and uttered a friendly, “Are you ready for more pictures?” His response was an unusual one for such a question. “I want to show you something,” he said and pulled out the pocket watch I had photographed earlier. He went on to explain that the watch had not worked for several years, but before the ceremony began he set the time to 6:00pm – their ceremony start time. When he pulled the watch out of his pocket after the ceremony he discovered it ticking away.
At the end of the night as Rachel and I were headed to the car we saw Drew and Kylee waiting for the elevator. He waved me over and pulled the watch out of his pocket again – it was keeping near perfect time.
Thank you both so much for trusting us to capture a day that was a long time coming. Cheers to the little miracles and finding your perfect person!
