One of my favorite things about this job is that I have the opportunity to witness some of the most profound and meaningful moments in our clients’ lives. I don’t mean just the marriage ceremony itself, but all the small moments and interactions that build up a wedding day. Allie and Buddy’s wedding was a great example of this – they met when they were 13 and have been together for ten years (their wedding day was actually their ten-year anniversary!). I enjoyed the sense of familiarity and comfort that the families obviously had with one another – after ten years, Allie was already pretty much a part of Buddy’s family, and vice versa! Allie and Buddy chose to have their hometown ceremony in Buddy’s family church in Theodore. It was truly special watching his family beam while watching their son marry, from the pews where they sit each and every Sunday. Their nieces and nephews were the sweetest flower girls and ring bearers, and the feeling of family permeated every part of the day. The bride’s aunt had her great-great grandmother’s wedding gown restored, and it was moving to see Allie’s gown hanging next to one worn in 1910. At their downtown Mobile reception, the couple gave everyone (EVEYRONE!) personalized coffee mugs that everyone used to make yummy hot chocolate and coffee drinks on this cold January day. It was the coldest day of the year (pretty consistently 27 degrees, which in lower Alabama is pretty much arctic), but no one cared. The guest bundled up, sipped steaming cocoa, and heaped hugs onto this couple.
